Green-Schools is an educational programme designed to raise students awareness of environmental issues through classroom study. The scheme offers a way to take environmental issues from the curriculum and apply them to the day-to-day running of the school, for example reduce litter, waste and fuel bills. This process helps students to recognize the importance of environmental issues and take them more seriously in their personal and home lives.
A Green Team has been elected in our school and they are working conscientiously to promote a sustainable environment. Holy Spirit Senior Primary School has received awards for the work they have carried out under the following themes: • Litter and waste • Energy • Water • Travel Presently, we are working on the biodiversity theme while keeping up the standards set on the above themes.
Our Green Team are very busy with different initiatives, including the Re-Turn scheme.

As well as that, our Green Team have given up their lunch time to pick up litter from outside the school and church grounds. They are a fantastic group of children who are passionate about the environment and are wonderful role models.

March 2026 Update
Our Green Schools initiative continues to go from strength to strength, thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of our students. This year, we have an active committee made up of a representative and sub-representative from every class, ensuring that every voice is heard and every class plays a part in making our school more sustainable.
We are currently working towards achieving the Global Citizenship: Litter and Waste Flag, an important milestone that encourages us all to think not only about our own environment, but also about our shared responsibility to the wider world.
In December, the committee carried out a detailed waste audit, carefully measuring the amount and types of waste produced in our school bins. This gave us a clear picture of where improvements could be made. The results motivated everyone to take action.
From January, the students got to work immediately. Across the school, classes have been making a conscious effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Food waste is being composted, recyclable materials are being sorted correctly, and we are all thinking more carefully about what we throw away.
Thanks to the hard work of the committee and the cooperation of every class, we have already seen a remarkable reduction in our black bin waste - a fantastic achievement that shows what can be accomplished when we work together.
To support our learning, the children also took part in an engaging recycling workshop, where they learned more about proper waste management and the impact of our actions on the environment.

We are now focusing on the theme of Global Citizenship, exploring how each of us has a role to play in caring for our planet. The students are learning that the choices we make every day - no matter how small - can have a big impact on protecting our shared Earth and its precious resources.
We are incredibly proud of the efforts of our students and look forward to continuing this important work in the months ahead. A huge thanks to Ms. Hickey and Ms. Lawlor for the work they have put into Green Schools.
